Early Onset Alzheimer’s and Your Rights to Social Security Disability Benefits

The early onset of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are devastating. These diseases progress rapidly and impact Americans between the age of 50 to 65. People don’t recover from these diseases yet the Social Security Administration has never fast tracked early onset of Alzheimer’s.

In October of 2008 the Social Security Administration began a compassionate allowance program. This provides for the quick processing of disability claims for Social Security Disability applicants with medical conditions that are so severe by definition that they would be entitled to Social Security benefits.

Commissioner Michael J. Astrue, has hosted a number of public hearing on compassionate allowances for early onset Alzheimer’s and related dementia’s.

It was the Social Security Administrations hope and linked with the Alzheimer’s Association that they can identify the most severe cases of early onset Alzheimer’s that can be included in a compassionate allowance process.
