Heart Disease and Your Entitlement to Social Security Disability Benefits

You may be entitled to Social Security Disability benefits as a result of cardiac disease. The Social Security Administration will use a Five Step Sequential Evaluation to determine your entitlement to benefits. To meet a listing, your medical records must document Angiographic evidence of one of the following:

1. 50% or more narrowing of a non-bypassed left main coronary artery
2. 70% or more narrowing of another non-bypassed coronary artery
3. 50% or more involving a long segment of a non-bypassed coronary artery
4. 50% or more narrowing of at least two non-bypassed coronary arteries
5. 70% or more narrowing of a bypassed graft vessel.

However, not all is lost if you are not able to meet a listing at Step Three.

You may have certain physical restrictions and limitations that prevent you from returning to your past relevant work.

If so, the burden of proof will shift to the Social Security Administration to show that based on your age, education, transferable skills, that there is another job that exists in the national economy that you may be capable of doing not withstanding your restrictions and limitations.
