New FEMA Study Supports First Responder Firefighter Claims under Heart and Lung Act | Sarasota County Wage and Hour Attorney

Uncategorized

A new medical study, funded by FEMA to determine if first responders are at risk of suffering sudden death or other cardiac events, has found that firefighters have cardiac disease more frequently than the U.S. population.

In an article written by FireRescue1 staff, it was noted that “one third of the firefighters tested had heart disease that is unrelated to traditional risk factors like hihg cholesterol.” Dr. Superko, a heart disease expert and lead investigator in the study, commented “Those results are astounding and point at job duties and environmnet as the primary determinants for early death in our first reponders.”

Many Florida First responder workers’ compensation claims are denied on the basis the Florida firefighter or law enforcement officer has “personal” risk factors that overcome the Heart and Lung Act. This study will help Florida First Responder attorney Nancy Cavey help first responders get Florida workers’ compensation benefits.
